When You Need (and Don’t Need) Truck Smog Checks
Vehicles in California are required to go through a biennial smog certification. This means that your vehicle (regardless of type, size, and make and model) should go through smog testing every two years before its registration with the DMV can be renewed.
If your truck is gasoline-powered, it needs to go through smog testing unless it has a model year of 1975 or older. If it’s powered by natural gas, it needs to go through smog inspection unless it has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs.
If your truck is diesel-powered, it has to go through smog checks if it has a model year of 1998 or newer and if its GVWR is less than 14,000 lbs. If your truck has a model year of 1997 or older, or if its gross vehicle weight rating goes beyond 14,000 lbs, then it can be exempt from the smog inspection requirement.
Truck smog checks are also required if you’re moving to California from another state and want to register your truck with the local DMV. You also have to get smog testing services if you’re selling your truck and are transferring its ownership to another entity.
