What to Expect During a Smog Check Inspection
If you’re a relatively new car owner, you probably don’t know much about the smog check inspection process. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry since getting a smog test isn’t as difficult as it seems! To help you prepare for your appointment, here’s a list of the things you can expect when bringing your car to a smog check station:
You’ll need to bring your renewal notice
You don’t need to bring a lot of things when you get a car smog test, but you do have to bring the vehicle registration renewal notice that you’ve received from the DMV. Pay attention to what’s written on the notice: if it says that you need to get a smog certificate from a STAR station, then you need to go to a STAR station in your area.
You have to allot at least 20 minutes for the test
The average smog inspection takes around 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, the inspector will hook up your vehicle to the testing equipment, which is connected to the computers at the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). The BAR computers will automatically receive and store the results of the test once it’s completed.
You’ll receive a copy of the test results
After the smog check, the inspector will provide you with a receipt for the test. They will also give you a copy of the inspection’s results, which is formally known as the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR). Make sure to keep this copy safe; you might need to present it to the DMV when renewing your registration in case the BAR failed to successfully receive the electronic transmission of your test results.
If your car passes the smog check, you can proceed with your vehicle registration renewal with the DMV. However, if your vehicle fails the smog test, you’ll need to have it repaired to ensure it can pass the next smog check and be eligible for registration renewal.
